This picture was taken when I worked at D Magazine in Dallas. Today I received a really sweet message from a former colleague. She said all that time we were together at D Magazine, I had no idea about your background, and I’m glad that you’re here, safe and independent.
D Magazine will forever be a very cherished time in my memory. It was a time when I decided I wanted to just enjoy my freedom. I overheard a conversation once in the women’s restroom. They didn’t know I was in one of the stalls. One woman said to another, “What’s up with Elise? Why is she’s so happy all the time? I mean, she sings Mary Poppins while she does the dishes“ The other woman replied, “Oh, Elise, she’s probably from Highland Park and her daddy probably gave her everything. I’m sure she’s never suffered at all and has nothing to worry about”. I smiled from the bathroom stall. I didn’t keep it a secret, but the truth is no one ever asked.
For me, D Magazine provided the perfect setting for me to experience being a free young American woman. I was far from carefree. I didn’t make enough money, I worried about bills, I had relationship problems & family problems just like everyone else. But when you have had every human right stripped from you to find yourself washing the dishes that were left over a long weekend with rotten chili in them, it feels like a lot of fun. Freedom paints everything with beautiful colors.
Those days and every day now I really enjoy the freedom that had been denied me my entire life, it’s why I dance down the steps, down the streets, sing Mary Poppins as I did the dishes, smiled when it rained, and tried to bring joy to everyone around me. Every day that you’re free is a day for singing, for smiling and for dancing down the street.
My life was black and white and now there is a wide range of colors I breathe in every day. Never take your freedom for granted.
